Black Angel is a highly sought after variant of Bucephalandra prized for its dark, almost black foliage. This buce can display stunning shades of deep greens, purples and blues depending on lighting and water conditions. The leaves are typically small to medium-sized, oval-shaped and feature a slightly rippled or wavy edge at times, giving them a texture appearance. Under optimal conditions, the leaves can exhibit substantial iridescence or metallic sheen.

Portion Size

You will receive a plant similar to what is shown in our showcase pictures.

Care Requirements

  • Light: Black Angel will thrive in low to medium light, but we recommend keeping it with medium light to encourage better colour. Maintaining light and nutrient balance helps to prevent algae accumulating on its slow growing foliage.
  • Water Parameters: Keep Black Angel within 21 and 27 degrees celsius. PH can range anywhere between 6.0 and 8.0 and maintain good water circulation.
  • CO2 Needs: Not strictly required but supplementation will help promote faster growth and bring out the plant’s best colouration.

Maintenance: We recommend keeping the leaves clean of debris to prevent buildup of algae and biofilm. Black Angel will benefit from liquid fertilisation.

Placement

Like other rhizome plants, it is crucial not to bury the rhizome in the substrate as this can cause the plant to rot. Black Angel is best attached to hardscape using a minimal amount of aquarium-safe glue, thread or simply wedging it in position.

It can be grown in the substrate provided that the rhizome sits above the substrate. Napad products can help you grow your Black Angel on the substrate where it can uptake more nutrients from aquasoil. Check out Napad here.

Propagation

Propagating Black Angel is straightforward and involves simply cutting the rhizome into pieces with a clean, sharp pair of scissors. Each separated rhizome should have some leaves attached to it.
