Catherine or often referred to as Catherinae, is a popular Bucephalandra species admired for its distinctive narrow foliage with beautiful rippled edges. The colour can vary, but it typically features a deep, emerald green with red accents from the rhizome under normal conditions. Certain variants like Catherine Red can display beautiful red and purple tones as well.

Portion Size

You will receive a large clump of catherine as depicted in the pictures with roots attached to Napad.

Care Requirements

  • Light: Buce Catherine does well in low to medium lighting, which is sufficient for healthy growth and minimises the risk of algae buildup on its slow growing leaves. Higher light is fine too, except it increases the risk of algae if the balance of nutrients is not ideal.
  • Water Parameters: Buce Catherine thrives within 21 and 27 degrees celsius. PH can range anywhere between 6.0 and 8.0 and maintain good water circulation.
  • CO2 Needs: While not required for Buce Catherine to survive, CO2 supplementation would accelerate its usually slow growth rate.

Maintenance: We recommend keeping the leaves clean of debris to prevent buildup of algae and biofilm. Buce Catherine will benefit from liquid fertilisation.

Placement

Like other rhizome plants, it is crucial not to bury the rhizome in the substrate as this can cause the plant to rot. Buce Catherine is best attached to hardscape using a minimal amount of aquarium-safe glue, thread or simply wedging it in position.

It can be grown in the substrate provided that the rhizome sits above the substrate. Napad products can help you grow your Buce Catherine on the substrate where it can uptake more nutrients from aquasoil. Check out Napad here.

Propagation

Propagating Buce Catherine is straightforward and involves simply cutting the rhizome into pieces with a clean, sharp pair of scissors. Each separated rhizome should have some leaves attached to it.
